After the fantastic success of London Wing Fest in 2015 Randy’s Wings wanted to grow the event in 2016. They chose Gillett Square, Dalston to play host, and with Superglue as preferred production supplier, we produced the event to ensure it met everyone’s expectations.
The main focus of the event is Buffalo chicken wings. 16 purveyors of the UK’s best Buffalo wings were invited by a judging panel to take part in the event. We allocated each of them a slot to set up a temporary stand and build a pop up kitchen. Ticket holders were given score cards and were encouraged to vote in two categories for their favourite wings of those which they sampled.
We built large bar structures for sponsors Southern Comfort and Frontier and a stage was erected at one end of a large seating area playing host to acoustic bands and the fiercely awaited hot sauce eating competition.
Our primary role was to run all operational and logistical elements of the event which ran for one day on 20th August 2016.
Superglue has been working with Gillett Square for some time to design strategies for how to make this kind of commercial activity viable on site. The income generated from commercial events is essential to the running of the HCD initiative as they provide much needed income to fund the community initiatives.
London Wing Fest was the first event of this kind in Gillett Square and took place in both the main square and across the adjoining car park. Both areas were cleared and fenced off to the public for the day. Public consultation took place in the lead up the event to ensure regular square users were on board and we continued to work with the community on the event day to ensure the event ran smoothly.
We produced water-tight event planning and management documentation which we supplied to local council and emergency services to gain compliancy. Further plans were submitted to the Hackney Licensing Department to secure the all-important Temporary Event Notice.
We carefully managed all of the food vendors to ensure they were compliant with plans, including the use of generators, hygiene, waste removal, etc… Bringing them on-site and the de-rig had to be accomplished in a very short time window due to the 24-hour nature of such an open urban space.
2200 tickets were made available on line and sold out in 40 mins. A further 200 were made available on the day.
We designed floor plans and produced branded event graphics ensuring the event was easy to navigate and accessible to everyone with a constant flow of guests through the square. Our front of house, clearing and production staff kept the event clean, clear and running smoothly.
The rain poured for the entire event build but our team soldiered on and we opened on time. Thankfully the sun came out as the event opened.
The event was a great success and Randy’s Wings are keen to grow the event further in 2017.
